County Tipperary Community Games

The County Tipperary Community Games Athletic Finals took place in Templemore Track on Sunday 26th June amid blue skies & beautiful sunshine. Our thanks to our County Executive who put in huge amounts of work to run this event, in particular to Kathleen England our County Secretary & Joan Hogan, her assistant & to all the Areas who provided help on the day. Our thanks also to Martin Leyden & his team from Templemore A.C. who provided a magnificent facility to stage the competition. Everything was top class on the day. The morning started around 10am with the Girls & Boys U/16 Marathon where Dylan Doherty (Thurles) & Killian Cullagh (Silvermines) ran side by side for the whole race & only separated about 30 metres from the finish line when Dylan outran Killian in a sprint finish. In the Girls race, Clare Horgan (St. Marys) was the clear winner with Laura Tobin (St. Peter & Paul) finishing in 2nd place. Following the Parade & the Opening Ceremony where the Pledge was read in English by Daniel Ryan, Moycarkey Borris & in Irish by Aoibhe O’Shea, Ballingarry, the National Anthem was played & sung by Silvermines & Cloughjordan & the Community Games flame was lit by St. Marys, our President Breeda Christie gave a great rousing speech & declared the Games open. First events up on the track were the Hurdles where Carrick won 3 out of the 4 events when Roseanne Fitzgerald won the Girls U/10 60mH, Dylan Wall won the Boys U/10 60mH & Rebecca Kelly won the Girls U/14 80mH. Carrick also did well in the Relays winning the Boys U/14, Girls U/16, Mixed U/10 & Mixed U/13 & they also won the Girls U/16 Javelin (Clodagh Fitzgerald) & High Jump (Emily Walsh). Moycarkey Borris were another Area that came to the fore on the day with Cillan McDonagh (Boys U/8 60m), Adam O’Dwyer (Boys U/10 200m), David Ryan (Boys U/12 100m), Daniel Ryan (Boys U/14 80mH), Jack Fallon (Boys U/12 600m), Ciara Mocker (Girls U/14 Shot Putt), John Duggan (Boys U/16 Discus) & their Boys U/12 Relay all winning gold & qualifying for the National Finals in Athlone. Lots of bag packing going on in those 2 areas for the Summer!!!! Well done to all the Areas who took part & to all the children who competed so well on the day. Area Secretaries don’t forget that all National Finalists need to give a copy of their Birth Certificate & 2 passport sized photos to Kathleen England as soon as possible together with a Medical Form & Resident/No-Resident Consent Form. These two forms can be found on our website at www.tipperarycommunitygames.com in the “Downloads” Section & under the National Finals Tab.
