The Barton Shield at Tramore last weekend saw our selection get to the third round before exiting the double Foursomes competition. The format is of aggregate holes up between the two pairs, played off scratch. Our representatives were Kieran Kennedy-Evan Long and Jon Foran-Emmet Leahy. They both had handsome wins over Mitchelstown on Saturday morning and Clonmel in the afternoon, with a joint surplus of eight holes. On Sunday morning, however, the team from Waterford Castle put an end to our ambitions with a margin of three holes.

The Junior Cup follows closely, with Mitchelstown as the host club this Saturday and Sunday. Teams will be of five - handicaps of five or above - to play Singles matches. Our first round will be against Tipperary (9.50am). Success would set up a meeting with Carrick-on-Suir or Co. Tipperary on Sunday afternoon at 3.30pm. The concluding Union event, the Senior Cup, also of five Singles matches and involving the lowest handicaps, will be on our own course on Saturday and Sunday, July 6th and 7th.

The Thursday Open Singles on June 20th resulted: R. Carroll (20) 46; P. Fallon (11) 43; G. McCormack (10) 40; gross, K. Kennedy (plus 2) 40. Also on 40 was L. Mackey (13), with M. O’Dwyer (3) on 39. There were 38’s from D. O’Dwyer (17), B. Callanan (11) and A. Ryan (5). Also beating the C.S.S. of 36 was M. Kennedy (4) with 37. The lovely weather seems to have put the competitors in scoring mood, Ritchie Carroll’s 46 would be quite a creditable card in a fourball. He shot nines of 24,22 with a deuce at the 3rd and nine pars piling up the points for him in a notable performance. Vice-Captain Pat Fallon’s 43 (22,21) began with seven pars before he dropped a couple of shots to the ninth. Pars from 12th to 18th completed a very fine return. Gerry McCormack’s 40 (20,20) for third place featured a zero at the 8th but birdies at 3rd and 6th. Kieran Kennedy’s gross of four under (35,33) was embellished with no fewer than six birdies, four of them on the back nine. Powerful play, indeed.

Friday “shotgun” Mixed Foursomes details: D. Hurley (19), E. O’Meara (18), K. Craddock (25), H. Rattigan (25) 44; Ml. Bracken (15), P. Foley (17), D. Connors (20), B. O’Dwyer (27) 44; T. Maguire (9), G. Callanan (19), J. Hennessy (23), P. Kirby (28) 44. The order of merit in the triple tie was decided on the last six holes, with 31, 30 and 29 points from the quartets as listed.

The Club Fundraising

Classic has become an important annual enterprise for that best of causes, the club itself. Strong support is urged for the three day event which runs from Friday to Sunday next. The format will be a three ball “Champagne” Scramble at 10 euro per member and 15 euro for visitors. Re-entry will be permitted. Time sheets available on the BRS for members from Wednesday, June 19th, or contact Ashling at (0504) 21983, Ext. No. 1.

Good deeds done on the golf course generally involve great shots and fine figures. A “birdie” of feathered variety, however, was the beneficiary of timely and kindly action on Tuesday of last week from Ml. Dempsey and Gerry Stapleton. The swans which inhabit the waters at the short 3rd, and the main Suir stream itself, are greatly admired. On this occasion, though, a cygnet was observed to be in difficulties through getting caught in an obstruction. Rescue was hand from the gallant pair of players. The cygnet was then brought to the appropriate vet, attended to as necessary and, on the following day, re-united with next of kin. Well done to the Samaritans!

Warm congrats to Lady Captain Louise Maher on the great success of her Prize competition, held on a beautiful Tuesday and a blustery Sunday. Also to the efficient organisers and, in particular to the worthy winner, Clodagh Cox.

Fixtures: Thursday, Open Singles; Friday - Sunday, Club Fundraising Classic.
