We began our league campaign with a home fixture against Lismore on sunday last in what was our first competitive fixture since the club formed. A dry but windy day was in store but with no rain we got through the day without any interruptions.
Having elected to bat we found the going very slow and lost in-form batsman fintan moore early when he was bowled for 5 runs. However Sean cawley held the innings together despite the regular fall of wickets around him and we managed to set Lismore a target of 82 which looked like being alot lower at one stage. Sean who finished on 25 had some good assistance from Asim and rateesh suresh in helping us reach our total.
Despite the low total we were confident especially with a slow pitch and slow outfield which made scoring difficult and indeed our opening bowlers reacted perfectly to the challenge. Aaron cawley had a fantastic spell and returned amazing figures of 2 for 11 off his 8 overs. Asim also bowled excellent and despite not taking a wicket also proved economical. Other wicket takers were Rateesh sureth who ripped through the lismore middle order by taking 3 fantastic wickets for only 14 runs to set up a tense finish and when serath and fintan moore also chipped in with late wickets thurles had lismore hanging on by a thread at the end. However the waterford men just about scraped over the line with only 1 wicket remaining to win by the finest of margins in what was an enthralling finish to the game. All in all a great effort from the lads in our first ever competitive game against an experienced outlift like lismore who were very relieved to win in the end. Many thanks to all who helped out with refreshments and of course the scorers.
Next week we travel to tralee to play county kerry cricket club in the minor cup. Players will be notified direct re arrangements. Report in next week’s notes.
