Ballingarry & KCH Athlete Lorraine O’Shea travelled to Glasgow last week end to take part in the Bank of Scotland under 17 Indoor Open Championships held in Kelvin Hall.
Twenty four athletes from Scotland & Ireland took part in the girls long jump which commenced early in the morning. After all athletes had taken their first three jumps Lorraine was leading with a jump of 5m 36cm. The top six jumpers at this point would now jump in the final with Lorraine jumping last. Lorraine fouled her next jump which saw the Scottish Schools champion Kirsten Galbraith take the lead when she jumped 5m 37cm. Lorraines 5th jump was no improvement and the pressure was really on when the Scottish girl again improved with another fine jump of 5m 49cm. She was now thirteen cm ahead as Lorraine prepared for her final jump of the day. Lorraine gave her final jump everything and when the officials were seen closely examining the jump board supporters feared a foul. The white flag was raised however and when the jump was measured there were roars of delight from the Irish supporters present. The final jump was measured at 5m 58cm, a new indoors personal best for Lorraine in the 2011 athletics season.
Later in the day Lorraine won her heat and semi final of the 60m sprint and in the final took a bronze medal when running a new PB of 7.88 seconds for the 60m sprint.
