Some Nenagh traders likely to oppose move to abolish free Saturday car parking

A suggestion by Nenagh Municipal District Council that the town may lose its free parking in car parks on Saturdays looks likely to be opposed by some town traders.

The proposal was revealed at the last MDC meeting when Cllr Hughie McGrath said all-day free parking had been received negatively around the town especially at Christmas.

Cllr McGrath urged the council to talk to Nenagh Chamber of Commerce and the new Town Forum to discuss the issue.

District manager Marcus O'Connor said that issue had already been raised and the consensus was that parking in car parks should be limited to just two hours free on Saturdays.

However, Peter Ward of Country Choice, Kenyon Street, told the Tipperary Star that free parking should come into play from 11am on Saturdays.

“It has been beneficial to Nenagh town centre. Shopping on Saturdays has developed into leisure shopping with fashion and coffee. The commercial mix of the town reflects that,” he said.
