Ryan’s Centra in Newport is in line to win the top prize at this year’s National Q Mark Awards, having seen off tough competition from hundreds of excellent Irish businesses.

Irene Collins, the Managing Director of Excellence Ireland Quality Association, announced yesterday that the team from Ryan’s Centra have exceeded the normal standards of quality and excellence and have set the standard that all other companies should be aiming for. She went on to say that, “The nomination in this category recognises that Ryan’s Centra is operating at the highest standard of Hygiene and Food Safety in the country.”

Given the serious concerns that many of us now have in relation to who is protecting us when it comes to quality testing and best practice, it is refreshing to know that EIQA - The Guardians of The Q Mark, are still rigorously auditing all types of businesses and will only award the coveted Q Mark to the one’s that operate at standards that operate above the current legislative requirements, and that have the consumer’s best interests in mind.

Ryan’s Centra Newport employs 35 local people and provides groceries and fuel to its customers. The store prides itself on the promotion of local produce and maintaining the highest standards of service to all customers. It is one of three stores owned by Tom and Brenda Ryan and has been in the Q Mark programme for three years.

On hearing that they had been nominated for this prestigious award, Michelle Kennedy, Group Food Safety Officer said, “To be shortlisted for this award is wonderful as it shows that the improvements and changes that we are implementing to our Food Safety and Hygiene Management System are truly impacting on the daily life of our store.”

She went on to say “It is an encouragement to all of the staff at Ryan’s Centra who have worked diligently to help implement all the changes made to our Food Safety policies and approach. Without the cooperation and hard work of staff in all areas in the store, these changes would not be so effective.”

This year’s star-studded Q Mark awards ceremony will take place in Dublin’s Burlington Hotel on September 27th when the team from Ryan’s Centra in Tipperary will go head to head with the best Irish businesses of 2013 to vie for what are known in the trade as ‘The Oscar’s of Business Excellence’.

The nomination for Ryan’s Centra is a great news story of how a local business can actually set the standards for the rest of the country, and hopefully their customers will remind them on a daily basis, that we applaud their accomplishment and will be wishing them well for the final in Dublin, on September 27th.
