Cashel Town Council is to encourage more people to come into the town after they have seen the Rock of Cashel. Cllr Martin Browne, SF, told the town council that 250,000 people visit the famous landmark each year, but the town “doesn’t see a quarter of it”.

He called for the council, in a motion, to restrict or stop buses from parking in the car park at the Rock and to work with tour operators and get them to use the car park in the town centre.

While he was supported by all the councillors, some felt it would be better to try and entice people into the town through incentives.

“There is no guarantee they will spend in the town, but we’re allowing buses to park in an area that is of no benefit to the town. If only a quarter of them spent E10, it would mean a lot,” said Cllr Browne.

However, Cllr Maribel Wood said: “You can’t force people to come into the town. We need good deals in shops and restaurants. We have to improve the town and present the best we have.”

The town clerk, Mary McGivern, told Cllr Eoghan Lawrence that the council had engaged with the tour operators but they are on a tight schedule.

“We now have more car users thanks to the high profile the Rock has received,” she said. “We’ll re-organise the signage so that car users can use their ticket for the Rock to park in the town.”

She hoped to have the signage organised by the end of this year, depending on finances. However, she also urged that businesses give incentives for visitors to come into the centre.

But Cllr Browne felt the council was being “too soft” on operators. “We are just showing them the Rock and nothing else,” he said.

Cllr PJ Quinlan asked that the council look at putting in a thoroughfare from the Rock to the town and that they work on the tour operators’ agendas, saying: “They are big into freebies.”
