A total of 79 rural villages and areas throughout Tipperary are to receive high speed broadband, it has been announced. The move has been welcomed by Junior Minister for Transport Alan Kelly and Fine Gael TD Noel Coonan.
Some of the areas include Clonakenny, Templetuohy, Lisheen, Annacarthy, Dolla and Silvermines.
The villages are to be served by a new fibre-based connection announced by Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte. The fibre network will be rolled-out across a total of 1,100 towns and villages nationwide.
“This is great news for homes, schools, businesses and community facilities in Tipperary and it heralds a new era of faster telecommunications for rural Ireland,” said Deputy Kelly.
“It represents a major investment in our county’s broadband infrastructure, and has happened because the Government has recognised the need to respond to growing consumer and business demand in these locations.
“This major fibre roll-out is a more ambitious programme than originally envisaged under the National Broadband Plan. It aims to guarantee that rural Ireland can enjoy similar quality broadband to urban Ireland.
Meanwhile, Deputy Coonan said the Government was committed to rural development, and a key element of this must be to invest sufficiently in infrastructure in areas outside of main towns and cities.
“The absence of high speed broadband has been a significant problem in rural areas, and is hampering job creation,” said Deputy Coonan. “The Government is committing to investing significantly in our fibre network, to ensure that rural communities are not left behind.”
