M7 Salt Barn Queried

THE need to spend €3.5m on building a salt barn at the Carrigatoher junction with the M7 was questioned by Cllr John Carroll at the February meeting of Newport electoral area councillors.

The Fianna Fail representative wanted to know if the council could not have utilised another building and spent the money elsewhere.

However, he was told by senior engineer Michael F Hayes that motorway maintenance was being contracted out and whoever won the contract would be looking after the M7 from Limerick to Portlaoise as well as the M8 in South Tipperary.

“We are treating the motorways at present but we won’t be doing that from next year. We will be looking after regional and national primary routes. Motorway maintenance is specialised work and anytime you go out on the motorway, there is a lot of cost,” he replied.
