Using our gifts and talents properly

It is noteworthy that the first Christians, as evidenced by reading the New Testament, were a diverse group of people. Jesus invited fishermen, tax collectors, a medical doctor (Saint Luke) and people from every walk of life to follow him.

The gospels record Jesus answering questions asked by leading Jewish scholars such as the Scribes and Pharisees, not to mention lawyers who tried to catch him out on details of the law. Rich people and the poorest of the poor were attracted to Christ.

Healthy and sick people wanted to be in his presence.

In summary, the entire panorama of human life was there in the early Church: all sorts of different people, each with his/her unique combination of skills and talents.

This diversity of skills and talents regarding the employment and backgrounds of the first Christians applies also to their contributions to the early Church’s life and mission.
