Tipperary Town Courthouse ‘Being Neglected’ - Leahy

TIPPERARY Town’s Courthouse is being neglected and is being “endangered” by the lack of any progress on repairs, Cllr Denis Leahy told members of South Tipperary County Council.
Cllr Leahy requested management to give a full report regarding works undertaken or works scheduled to take place on Tipperary Courthouse which is a listed Protected Structure and protected by law according to Part IV of the Planning and Development Act 2000. “There is a legal requirement on us to do something about it,” said Cllr Leahy.
A legal action has been taken by Solicitors in the town demanding that works be carried out on the dillapidated building. The building requires millions of euro to be spent on it before it can be brought back back into working condition. Meanwhile, Court cases cannot be heard there. The legal action being taken by the solicitors, has seen the County Council being joined as one of the parties involved.
“We have seen a lot of services slip away from the town,” added Cllr Leahy. There was a “strong rumour” that the Dept. of Agriculture office is about to be transferred to Naas. Tipp has already suffered the loss of a Teagasc office. “We should write to Simon Coveney about the loss of those jobs. It it’s true, it would be a huge blow,” said Cllr Leahy.
