Tipperary Hero Honoured On American Civil War CD

Father Abram Joseph Ryan, son of Matthew Abraham Ryan and Mary Coughlan Ryan of Clogheen, has been honoured by a specially-written song that is featured on the new music CD From The Famine To The Front, produced in Nashville to mark the significant contribution made by Irish people on both sides of the American Civil War.

The song, called ‘Song of the Mystic’, was composed by the CD’s producer Thomm Jutz with Charley Stefl and Peter Cronin. It relates how Ryan, who was also a writer, helped the dying during bloody battles, and describes him as “the patriot, the priest and the poet laureate.” It concludes with the emotional words, “In the valley of silence his words have found wings and the song of the mystic forever - he sings.”

Ryan’s ancestral homeland of Clogheen is a few miles from the River Suir which is also mentioned on the album in the evocative spoken track ‘A Legacy.’

James Doherty, the Waterford-based founder of the Irish American Civil War Trail, is full of praise for the CD, saying “The music written and recorded for From The Famine To The Front is a must for anyone with an interest in the role played by the Irish in the American Civil War. The music offers an invaluable insight into the hopes, thoughts, passion and beliefs of the people, such as Father Ryan, who participated in that conflict.”
