TWO Gardaí are lucky to be alive following a shooting incident in Newport on Monday evening, after a driver shot at them up to seven times with a shotgun and rifle.
Sergeant Deborah Marsh and Garda Gerry Brassil were forced to take cover behind their patrol car after they came under fire from a driver they stopped as part of a routine patrol.
Tony McMahon (45) was ordered to stop on the Thurles road near the GAA pitch. As Garda Brassil approached the car, it’s understood McMahon opened fire at the garda at close range with a shotgun, narrowly missing his head.
McMahon - a taxi driver originally from Limerick who was living in Rearcross - continued firing while Garda Brassil tried to overpower him.
The garda suffered burn injuries from the shots.
