Tipp People Asked To Show Concern

Last Christmas people in Tipperary generously spent over €15,000 on gifts with Concern which had a real and lasting impact on the lives of some of the world’s poorest people

For the one in seven people that go hungry every day, December 25 is no different to any other day. Just like any other day almost one billion people in the world will wake up hungry and will face another day without enough food to eat. But you can help.

This year Concern Worldwide are once again calling on your support. The organisation is offering a number of gifts that have been carefully chosen to offer practical, lasting benefits to some of the world’s poorest families and communities.

Gifts come in all shapes and sizes and prices to suit everyone. For the price of a cinema ticket at €15 you could provide a family with 6 chickens. Over the course of a year this little flock could yield up to 200 nutritious eggs which can be used to feed the family, sell or leave to hatch into a new brood.

You could give someone a goat for €40 that would provide gallons of healthy milk for a family plus manure for their crops or a donkey for €45 to carry water and crops making a life changing difference to a family in the developing world.

For €61 you could train up to 25 farmers in simple techniques that can help stop soil erosion, harvest rain water, improve crops and so grow more food for their families.

It is not just individuals who can make a difference with Concern gifts, companies can too. By donating some, or all, of their Christmas gift budget to Concern, they will be sending a message of hope to people in the poorest countries of the world as well as to their business colleagues. For example, €650 could be used to provide six sewing machines as well as scissors, tape measures and cloth to 20 women taking part in Concern’s tailoring programme in Uganda so they have the means to make a living.

Richard Dixon, Director of Public Affairs with Concern said “While it can be great fun to give someone an unusual or quirky gift like a cow or a goat for Christmas, the real advantage is that the recipient in one of the countries where we work will enjoy the benefits for a very long time.”

Buying a gift is simple. You can order online at www.concerngifts.org or you can call 1850 458 400. Concern will then send you a special card that you can give to someone, telling them all about their gift and how it goes directly to the people who need it most.
