TIPPERARY community worker Gearóid Fitzgibbon will be one of the key speakers at the Irish Congress of Trade Unions forthcoming Day of Action against Austerity and Debt in Limerick on February 9.

Mr Fitzgibbon, who is a community development worker for the North Tipperary Leader Partnership, and a member of Siptu, is urging the people of North Tipperary to take part in the protest.

”North Tipperary Leader programmes are helping communities fight the recession, but it is not enough. The whole economy needs a jolt in the arm. I support ICTU’s call for a National House Insulation Scheme. This would put construction workers back to work, put more money in the economy and reduce our dependence on oil. Minister Pat Rabbitte is asleep at the wheel on this,” he said.

Explaining his reasons for taking part in what is expected to be the biggest protest in the Mid-West for several years, Mr Fitzgibbon said: “Young people deserve better options than unemployment, emigration and poverty. Our union, Siptu, has outlined costed proposals that could raise revenue and put thousands of people back to work. This day of protest is about pressing our Government to listen to and act on those proposals.”

Local councillors Lalor McGee and Seamie Morris are also urging support for the march, which is also attracting a wide range of support from a range of community and non-governmental organisations.

Local Siptu organiser Paul Gavan confirmed that the protest is open to all groups and individuals who support the ICTU call for a deal on debt, a jobs stimulus programme and increased taxation for the wealthy rather than more cuts for working families.

Unions including Siptu, CWU, MANDATE, IMPACT, ASTI, UNITE and BATU are supporting the march, which is being co-ordinated locally by Limerick Council of Trades Unions. People from Tipperary, Limerick and Clare are expected to assemble for the protest at 1.30pm on Saturday, February 9, at the Mechanics Institute on Hartstonge Street, Limerick, which is behind the People’s Park and close toLimerick Rarilway station for those who want to use the train to attend the rally.
