Tipp Artist Crafts Giant Egg

From February until Easter, Dublin will become home to the biggest Easter egg hunt in the history of the state and it will all be in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation proudly sponsored by Lily O’Brien’s. Artist Maria O’Donovan, who is originally from Crohane, Ballingarry, was selected to participate in the event alongside artists and celebrities including Guggi, Felim Egan, Rasher, Louise Kennedy, John Rocha, Ireland’s newest music sensation the Strypes and household names like 2fm’s Joe Duffy, Rick O’Shea and Cormac Battle.

Over 100 fibre glass eggs will be secreted around the capital. Each one of the eggs are 2 ½ ft in height and decorated by well known artisans. As a contemporary visual artist Maria is concept driven and experimental within her work. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and strives to develop art practice both as an artist working in a rural community and as an art teacher in Thurles CBS.

The artist’s representation of the Greek myth of Leda and her egg is depicted in her design, where the concepts of preserving of our history, our heritage, our childhood and the female character through the tradition of story telling in its many forms and mediums is explored.

“Preserve the egg carefully… for a great misfortune would arise from the loss of it” (from the writings of Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm) is painted on the egg and sums up the importance of this preservation. This egg along with all the others will go on display on Pancake Tuesday 12th February for 40 days and 40 nights across Dublin.

The locations of the eggs will not be revealed, it’s up to you to find the two and half foot eggs. Each egg has a code which you have to identify to enter the draw for a grand prize (diamonds for Mum sponsored by Diamant.ie, chocolate factory visit for kids, and a year’s supply of chocolate from Lily O’ Brien’s).

The eggs will be auctioned for charity in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation.

The online auction will begin on 12th February culminating in a live auction at the Four Seasons Hotel on 23rd March. The hand crafted eggs are destined to become highly collectible and valuable works of art. Find out more at www.thebigegghunt.ie
