Thurles Town Council Briefs

Grants Awarded

Thurles Rugby Football Club and Thurles Crokes Athletic Club have been awarded grants under the Community, Sports and Cultural grants scheme by the council. Thurles Crokes, having built a new clubhouse and ancilliary facilities were awarded E77,917 - 50% of the cost, while Thurles Rugby Club which has provided new floodlighting received 30% of the cost which amounted to E22,034. The grants were unanimously approved and both clubs praised for their vision and the facilities they provide for the people of the town.

Tourism Brochure

Councillor Evelyn Nevin gave a comprehensive rundown on a new Tipperary tourism brochure entitled Tipperary - Not Such a Long Way. This brochure will be available at all the major holiday trade shows, she said, and has also been made available by pdf to be downloaded from the internet. Meanwhile Cllr Jim Ryan called for a return of the Derrynaflan Chalice to Tipperary as a well as gold and silver coins found at an ancient Viking settlement discovered during excavation for the motorway. He added that a representative of the South Korean Government is to visit St Mary’s Garden or Remembrance having requested a tour.

Make TD’s Pay Rates

Councillor David Doran has called for support for a Resolution from Ennis Town Council seeking payment of rates from TD’s and Senators for their constituency offices - at present they are exempt under law. Cllr Doran described it as “ a bizzare law” while Cllr John Kennedy supported his call. The council is to write to the TD’s seeking a contribution. Meanwhile Cllr Evelyn Nevin was informed that charity shops are liable for rates, but the Town Council does not impose them due to the nature of the business.

Lights Out

Lights were reported out of action at Rosemount (Cllr Jim Ryan and Mayor Cleary). Cllr Noel Dwyer meanwhile asked for progress to be made on the removal of an ESB pole in the centre of the footpath at Kickham Street.

Pedestrian Crossings

Councillor Jim Ryan asked for consideration to be given to a pedestrian crossing at Lognafola, while Cllr John Kennedy asked for a report to be undertaken regarding the provision of a crossing at Slievenamon Road, near Ely’s Centra.
