Thurles Fairtrade Events To Encourage Public
This is the 11th year of Fairtrade Fortnight which is a nationwide effort to promote awareness of Fairtrade, to encourage people to buy products carrying the FAIRTRADE Mark and to ultimately look after the food we love and the people who grow and produce it.
Visitors working with Fairtrade Certified sugar and cotton producers from Malawi and Senegal will tour Fairtrade Towns across Ireland. We in Thurles are very privileged as Martha Lunji will visit us from Malawi, Africa. Martha is an electrical engineer by profession and was elected a Member of Parliament in Malawi. Since 2009, she has also been a sugar cane farmer and transporter and elected chairperson of the Fairtrade committee.
Martha will talk about her work for Fairtrade at LIT Tipperary Monday 4 March at 11 am and all are welcome.
We also invite all of our supporters and the general public to join us at a Fairtrade coffee Morning at Thurles Credit Union on Friday 8 March from 10.30am to sample some Fairtrade tea, coffee and confectionary made from Fairtrade ingredients
Fairtrade Fortnight unites all Fairtrade supporters, bringing together retailers, manufacturer’s producers and consumers.
Executive Director of Fairtrade Ireland Peter Gaynor commented,
“Without our support now, farmers in developing countries face a difficult and uncertain future. These smallholders in developing countries are increasingly hit by fluctuating commodity prices affecting their income and the prices they pay for the food they buy themselves, rising global food prices, rising production costs, and increasingly the impacts of climate change. Notwithstanding the on-going economic recession in Ireland, Fairtrade continued to grow in 2012. We are asking people to go further again for Fairtrade in 2013, but we are also saying Fair Play for all their support so far.”
In solidarity with the Fairtrade cause, Thurles Fairtrade will also be represented at Thurles Farmers market on Saturday 2 March.
Fairtrade protects the interest of the farmers, workers and buyers. In addition to this, Fairtrade standards also help the farmers to have sustainable business, making it possible for them to take care of the environment. Workers’ rights are protected as shown by use of personal protection equipment by workers in the fields, prohibition of child labour and observance of minimum wage.
So Thurles consumers ‘Fair Play to ya’ for all your support in the past and we look forward to seeing you on 2 March at the Farmers market, at LIT Thurles on 4 March and the Credit Union on 8 March to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight 2013.
