Thurles Drama Group Presents ‘All My Sons’
Thurles Drama Group returns to the stage next week with their festival production for 2013, the Arthur Miller classic “All My Sons”, directed once again by the award winning Margaret McCormack.
Based on a true story, All My Sons is the Post-World War II tale of the Kellers, a seemingly “All American” family. But the father, Joe Keller, has concealed a great sin. During the war, he allowed his factory to ship faulty airplane cylinders to the U.S. Armed Forces. Because of this, over twenty American pilots died. After the deaths of the pilots, both Joe and his business partner Steve Deever are arrested. Joe is exonerated and released and the entire blame shifts to Steve who remains in jail. Keller’s two sons, Larry and Chris, served during the war. While Chris came home, Larry’s plane went down in China and the young man was declared missing in action.
We join the action three years later when Chris has invited Ann Deever, their neighbour and his brother’s fiancé, to their home intending to propose to her. His mother Kate is opposed to the marriage, willing Ann to wait for Larry’s return and refusing to believe, that her beloved son is dead.
The superbly constructed plot progresses inexorably and the play is brilliantly persuasive on the way the human mind and heart can know a dark truth and yet still somehow deny it.
The highly experienced cast comprises: Martin Fitzgerald(Joe Keller), Mary Condron (Kate Keller), David McElgunn (Chris Keller), Katherine Dee (Ann Deever), Donal Ryan (George Deever), Liam Ryan (Dr Jim Bayliss), Liz Clancy Kirwan (Sue Bayliss), Andy Dawson (Frank Lubey), Mary Bowe (Lydia Lubey) and in his first performance with Thurles Drama Group, Cathal McElgunn as Bert.
A stellar backstage team has been working tirelessly over the past number of weeks constructing a superb set under the watchful eye of Ann O’Dwyer (Set Designer), Mary McLoughlin (Stage Manager), and our hard-working Stage Crew: Pat Loughnane, Dick Ryan, Geraldine Byrne, Tom & Conor Bourke, Bill Purcell, Hugh Ryan, Emma Langan, Ann Marie Lambe and Johanna Cullagh. They are ably assisted by Catherine Murphy (Costume Mistress), Gerry Taylor & Sean O’Dwyer (Lighting), Andrew Farrell & Kevin Kirwan (Sound) and Brid Ryan, Joe Barry & Brid Cahill(Continuity)
As always, opening night is a benefit night and this year, all proceeds will go to Scoil Angela Ursuline Primary School. Tickets priced at €20 can be purchased from any member of the group. All other nights are priced at €15 and €10 conc.
Following their week long performance at The Source, the team will travel on the festival circuit taking on the maximum number of eight festivals throughout the country during March and hoping to emulate the success of last year’s “The Seafarer” which saw them reach the All Ireland Open Finals in Athlone.
