Theft From Shop Strategy Seminar

Assistant Commissioner Jack Nolan, South Eastern Region, recently hosted a Theft from Shop Strategy Seminar at the Garda College, Templemore. The seminar was attended by representatives of all the major stores in the South Eastern Garda Region including Dunnes Stores, Lidl, Superquinn, TK Maxx, Pettits, Heatons, G4S Security, Retail Ireland, and the Irish Petroleum Industry Association.

Chief Superintendents from the four Garda Divisions of Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and KIlkenny/Carlow in the South Eastern Region, along with Criminal Intelligence Officers and Senior Detective personnel from the Region also attended. Invited guests from the major retail and retail security sectors nationally and in the South Eastern Region attended and made presentations.

There were also contributions by the Garda Siochana Analysis Service, the Garda National Crime Prevention Office, the Garda Bureau of Crime Investigation and local Divisional Crime Prevention Officers.

The seminar provided a forum for the sharing of information between An Garda Siochana and key stakeholders in the retail industry to target the incidence of theft from shops, employee theft, drive-offs from service stations, retail fraud, and promote best practice in crime prevention methods to reduce levels of shoplifting and theft in retail outlets.

An analysis of crime statistics indicate that thefts from shops increase in the South Eastern Region from March to May each year, and shop owners and retail security companies are requested to have security measures in place to prevent these types of crimes and deter would-be offenders from engaging in shoplifting offences.

The principal objective of the Seminar was to share best practice in crime prevention and to reduce opportunities for criminals in this area.
