Thanks To Davern’s Bar Cashel As Pass The Hat Folk Night Moves On
Davern’s Bar Cashel has been hosting the Pass the Hat Folk Sessions all summer and it has been a huge success. “The number of musicians who turned up for a song or a tune amazed us,” said Pass The Hat instigator, Sean Laffey, and he continued “as did the variety of music that just happened on a Tuesday nights. I tried the concept last year for the EU rural Charter as folk Fringe event.
“This year Aidan Muldoon of Davern’s bar ran with it. Looking back on a fantastic summer of music, we had Irish ballads, jigs and reels, French jazz, American Old-timey, German Leider, Brazilian folk songs and even a bit of acoustic heavy metal (Whiskey in the jar by Robert from Carlow). The trio of bodhrán players accompanied John on the big red box with his fondness for old time waltzes. Ger on the flute gave us some blistering trad tunes and, Brendan on banjo and guitar was on hand to bring in some blues when needed (on a Monday). The younger element was lead by HJ on the ukulele and those dark songs. Billy Bob came in from time to time with his songs about blondes. Thanks to Joanne for the songs straight out of Drogheda and the Stray Leaf Hush Hush Club, one of the bets night when we had some sean-nos from Eddie. And of course the unforgettable reggae Spancill Hill from big Seanie Ryan (Oh Ya Ya).
Tuesday September 4th was the final night Pass the Hat Session in Davern’s as the pub will be running reduced hours over the rest of the autumn season. Sean said he would like to publicly offer thanks to Aidan Muldoon and his staff for hosting the weekly impromptu sessions. Sean sad Pass the Hat, will continue in another venue in town, and “the joy of Davern’s was the way in which anyone in the audience would get up and have a song or a tune, we always had a spare guitar and every form of music was welcome, we’d love to keep it going through the winter and we are looking for a pub to host it, we are open to all offers, just call me on 62685 and we’ll see what happens, in essence we need a place where a listening audience can enjoy themselves.”
The same principle will apply: no banjo turned away no musician goes home thirsty, and Sean commented “for all those who attended Davern’s in the Summer of 2012, didn’t we have some fun?”
