Templemore Wants To Retain Council Office
TEMPLEMORE Town Council is seeking that a council office be kept in the town after North and South Tipperary county councils are merged at the next local elections in 2014. “I would like to think they would keep the connection as Nenagh and Clonmel are a long way away,” said Cllr Valerie Young.
Mayor Michael C Ryan said he hoped that those at the Boundary Commission took notice of their submissions on the new boundaries.
“We are an important part of local government,” he said.
The council submitted its reaction to the proposed amalgamation of the two local authorites to the Local Electoral Boundary Committee at the end of January.
In it, they point out that Templemore Town Council has been in existence for over 151 years and was “totally opposed” to the proposed abolition of town and borough councils.
However, they stated that, as a testamount to the efforts to reorganise local government, the council was prepared to engage in the process by making a submission.
The submission states that the council is supportive of the municapal district concept with the areas designed around existing municipal towns.
However, the councillors are not supportive of the stipulation on municapal district representation and they believe it will lead to large geographical spreads and consequent dilution of representation along with the further removal of local government from the people.
The submission also questions the legislative power to implement the proposals, having regard to the constitutional status of local government, and also questions the economic benefits of the proposal.
“In conclusion, we the members feel, while the proposal has much to commend it, there is a need to slow the process to enable proper consideration be given to some aspects,” the submission states.
At the town council meeting, town clerk Tom McGrath said the submission was “broadly supportive because you can’t be anti without having alternatives”.
