Support Childrens’ Referendum - Kelly
Local TD, Alan Kelly, Minister for Public Transport and Commuter Affairs is urging voters to support the Children’s Referendum on November 10th. The proposed rights and protections incorporated in the amendment are for the benefit of all children, irrespective of the marital status of their parents.
The aim is that children of married and non-married parents will be treated equally when it comes to protecting their safety, their access to adoption and consideration of their best interests in key proceedings.
Minister Kelly says “the Children’s Referendum seeks to do the following; it sets out that children have rights as children, with all children to be made equal, it allows the State to intercede in families when children are in danger, it will allow children of married parents to be adopted if they have been abandoned for three years, it obliges any court to be guided by the best interest of the child and finally it obliges courts to hear the views of the child”.
The amendment provides for the making of legislation to allow for adoption when it is in the best interests of a child in foster care due to the continuous failure of their parents, irrespective of their parent’s marital status. It also facilitates the making of legislation to allow for the voluntary placement of a child for adoption.
By voting YES on the 10th of November, the Irish people will eliminate inequalities in adoption and help ensure that vulnerable children are not denied the help and support that they may need, he said.
