Successful Tidy Towns Seminar

North Tipperary County Council held a very informative Tidy Towns seminar which took place on Saturday 2nd March in Cloughjordan. The seminar was introduced by Deirdre Cox, Environmental Awareness Officer, North Tipperary County Council who outlined the different grant schemes, competitions and supports provided to Tidy Towns groups, burial ground committees and schools. Deirdre outlined support to many community groups on environmental initiatives.

Vincent Carragher, Tipperary Energy Agency, gave a very informative talk about Energy Neighbourhoods and outlined the importance of sustainability and reduced consumption in our towns and villages.

The seminar was also addressed by Eamonn de Stafford, consultant, and National Tidy Towns adjudicator for many years. Eamonn is also a jury member in the Entente Florale competition. Eamonn’s talk focused on the competition from an adjudicator’s perspective, providing invaluable assistance in completing the entry form effectively and practical examples of best practice.

This year, particular emphasis was placed on biodiversity and trees (to celebrate National Tree Week). Dale Treadwell, a well-known Ecologist spoke about best practice in the care and conservation of our local biodiversity whilst highlighting the role of trees within our community. Dale also gave some general tips for enhancing and protecting wildlife and natural amenities in towns and villages.

Groups also used the opportunity to chat together and engage in lots of essential networking! Following the close of the seminar, Duncan Martin led a guided tour around the unique Cloughjordan eco village
