Substitute Teachers

Minister for Public Transport and Commuter Affairs Alan Kelly TD has today welcomed the move by the Minister for Education to instruct his department to investigate schools to see if they are disregarding the rules and hiring reired primary teachers as substitutes.

Minister Kelly has said that it is only fair that young teachers and newly graduated teachers should given the opportunity to get experience as substitute primary teachers, rather than to give it to those who are on a pension and enjoying their retirement. “I have had representatives from a number of young teachers who have been unable to get substitute work despite their best efforts, hopefully this move by Minister Quinn should help the situation”.

Minister Quinn has indicated that school principals only use retired teachers unless they cannot find an unemployed graduate to substitute for a teacher on sick or maternity leave.
