South Tipperary ICA Members visit An Grianan

56 Members of South Tipperary ICA have returned from a fabulous week in An Grianan – the National Adult Education College run by ICA.  As one member put it, we had our very own ‘Boot Camp’ taking part in Cookery, Yoga, ‘Time for Yourself’ (which includes reflexology, beauty therapy and massage), Computers, Ribbon Embroidery, Beaded Jewellery and Watercolours Courses.

Mrs. Peggy O’Brien, Federation President said that she has done a variety of courses at An Grianan and this year opted for The Computers Course but she made time every day to visit the various classes to see at first hand the quality of the teaching and the enjoyment of the members. Peggy is also the Chairperson of the National Advisory Committee of ICA and as such she had to attend a meeting of the National Executive.

Members of the Carrick on Suir Guild marked their 50th Anniversary by attending the week at An Grianan.  Their special two-tiered birthday cake was cut jointly by the Guild President, Mrs Kay Maher and the National President, Mrs. Liz Wall.  Kay said they were keeping a portion of the cake for the members who were unable to travel to An Grianan.

The Highlight of the week was the visit to Belfast to view the ‘Titanic Exhibition’.  Kathleen Dalton of Tipperary Town Guild who made the arrangements for the visit said it was a very tasteful and moving exhibition; “the six-storey centre tells the story of the Titanic through nine galleries each devoted to a different aspect of the tragedy.”  Betty Williams of Rathkeevin Guild said; “I loved the memorial garden which has been planted beside the Centre right next to the slip way where the luxury liner was floated for the first time.”  Betty was also delighted to see so many young people employed by the exhibition organisers.

Ina Ryan from Cappawhite loved the Cookery Class and the social evenings especially the Dancing. Everyone enjoyed the dance evening and were joined by ladies from Dublin and Donegal and danced all the popular social dances up to midnight.
Farewells said everyone returned to South Tipperary very much refreshed after the week at An Grianan and looking forward to meeting up at the Federation Meeting in Cahir House Hotel on 4th October. Thanks and appreciation to Kathleen Dalton who is the Federation Officer responsible for organising the visits to An Grianan.
