Jamie Boyle, Nenagh: family and friends to unveil a banner in his memory at this Wednesday's Ireland and Poland soccer match in the Aviva Stadium

YOUNG Nenagh athlete and sports fan Jamie Boyle, who died suddenly last month at the age of 24, is to be remembered by his friends and family at this Wednedsay’s international soccer friendly between Ireland and Poland in the Aviva Stadium.

Jamie, who played for Nenagh AFC as a juvenile before an illness forced him to use a wheelchair, seldom missed an international soccer match and travelled to Poland for last year’s European Championships.

Now, to honour their friend, Nenagh soccer supporters will unveil a banner at the international in his memory, and any Nenagh soccer fan attending the match can look out for the banner.

Donncha Hassey, who has been working on the 5’ x 10’ by banner, whch reads, Jamie Boyle Ireland Football Supporters Club, told the Tipperary Star this Tuesday that they plan on taking the banner to home and away matches and it will travel to Sweden next March for the World Cup qualifier. When it is not on display at matches, the banner wil be on show in the Kenyon Bar, Nenagh, where Jamie, a Manchester Utd fan, used go to watch matches.

The banner will be waved by 14 Nenagh people, all friends and family members, at the Aviva on Wednesday, and while Donncha was not sure if it would be acknowledged officially by the FAI, he said they were hoping there might be a tribute to Jamie in the match programme.

Jamie, son of Martin and Mary from Millersbrook, despite having an illness that required him to use the aid of a wheelchair, excelled in the discus, shot putt and javelin. He also played basketball. A past pupil of St Joseph’s CBS, he went on to obtain a business degree.

Meanwhile, Donncha said that the group is hoping to organise a fundraiser for the Irish Wheelchair Association coming up to the summer.
