Record Numbers Set for Tipperary Ladies Mini Marathon

By Trisha Purcell

The Tipperary Women’s mini-marathon has attracted record numbers this year with over 1,200 women planning to run, walk or jog the 10k around Thurles this Sunday, September 30th.

Organised every year by the North Tipperary Sports Partnership and South Tipperary Sports Partnership, the event will start and finish at the back gates of LIT Tipperary and the full route map can be seen at www.tippminimarathon.ie.

Race Organisers Elaine Cullinan (NTSP) and Valerie Connolly (STSP) said: “Registration is now closed and we are delighted with the entry levels this year, all the marketing and PR efforts have resulted in record numbers registering for the event this year.”

The central location of Thurles has proven to be a popular and convenient location for participants, and this is reflected in the race numbers.

“We have a reach as far north as Lorrha and down as far as Carrick on Suir, as well as entries from Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and many other counties” added Elaine Cullinan (NTSP).

The days events will commence with a pre-race warm up with Thurles Leisure Centre, and then the Moycarkey Band will lead the race field out onto the Jimmy Doyle Road to the Start Arch.

Valerie Connolly (STSP) said: “Catherina McKiernan, former Irish Olypmian, will say a few words, before she lines up for the race, and the Mayor of Thurles, Mr. Michael Cleary, will then officially start the race. We are delighted to have Catherina with us in Thurles for the weekend, as she is conducting a Chi Running workshop for NTSP in LIT Tipperary (Thurles) on the Saturday, and taking part in the Mini Marathon on Sunday, so have your cameras ready.”

The Tipperary Mini Marathon committee are also very grateful for the support received from local businesses this year.

Tom Harvey Motor Co Ltd. are sponsoring all the water for the event, as well as refreshments at the finish line and they will also supply the lead car for the event.
