Push on for Deal for Undocumented Irish in the US - Thurles Mayor Cleary
Fine Gael Councillor Mayor Michael Cleary has reported that both An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, and An Tánaiste, Eamon Gilmore TD, are working to secure a resolution to the difficulties that face undocumented Irish migrants in the USA.
“I am very pleased to hear that An Taoiseach has raised the matter of immigration reform with President Obama in a letter on January 30th as well as in a recent telephone conversation,” Mayor Cleary stated.
“It has also been confirmed that An Tánaiste will hold a series of telephone discussions with key US Senators over the coming days, and that he personally raised the issue with outgoing the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, during a bilateral meeting on December 6th 2012. “The passage of E3 visas for Irish citizens would be of enormous importance to so many Irish citizens who live without documentation in the USA, as well as to so many families here in Ireland. We all know of families living locally who have someone living in the US without a Visa. This can prevent them from travelling home when they wish – often missing important family occasions. President Obama placed a big emphasis on immigration reform in his recent inauguration address and in his subsequent speech on the issue on January 29th, which appears to be a very positive signal of his intention to follow through with this reform.
“I commend An Taoiseach and An Tánaiste for the priority that they are giving to this issue at present. The Irish Government is pushing very hard for a deal, which if secured, will make a big difference to many families in Thurles and Templemore area.”
