Portugal Visit is ‘No Junket’ – Councillors

TWO Councillors who have been nominated to fly out to Portugal as part of an EU initiative, insisted they were not travelling on a “junket” and will be footing some of the costs for the visit from their own pockets.
Cashel hosted the EU Charter in 2011, bringing together the Mayors and representatives of rural towns across Europe. Cllr PJ Quinlan (FG) and Cllr Eddie Bennett (Ind) are due to return the compliment this year when they stay in Samuel in Portugal from July 25/29. The Councillors will have the honour of being the only public officials representing a rural Irish town at the conference.
Cllr Martin Browne (SF) said: “I don’t think we should be sending people to all these meetings. That’s what the feeling is outside the Chamber.”
Cllr Quinlan said he knew there was genuine feeling out there regarding the spending of public money, but the 2011 meeting really showcased Cashel, and it would reflect poorly on the town and country if nobody represented Ireland this year. “We were very fortunate with that weekend. It’s not a junket. There’s no big spending of money.
