THE Mayor of North Tipperary, Cllr Michael O’Meara, along with county manager Joe MacGrath and Cllr Ger Darcy, chair of the Mid-West Regional Authority, will spend the St Patrick’s weekend in New York promoting the county

Mayor O’Meara told the Tipperary Star that he felt it was “important to go, especially in the year of The Gathering and if they were trying to encourage people to visit”.

The Mayor said the three will leave Ireland this Wednesday and depart New York on Sunday night.

The Independent councillor pointed out that the Mayor was in the country for “360 days of the year and it was no harm to spend two or three days outside trying to promote it as good as we can”.

He revealed that the trip wil cost E1,000 in flights and accommodation for himself.

“It doesn’t cost a fortune and we hope to bring back many fold what we spend. We are meeting tourism and industry people and those meetings have to bring a dividend. I think it’s a positive,” he said.

The Mayor said they will have a packed agenda for the trip, and this will include meetings with Tourism Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, CIE Tours International, IDA Ireland and the Tipperary Association in New York, who had extended the invitation for the visit. The delegation will also attend New York’s parade on Saturday and attend Mass on Sunday.

“I will be loaded down with literature and brochures about The Gathering, and will be pushing Aglish and Lorrha, who are leading the charge in this area. I will be promoting The Gathering strongly and will have a brochure containing the full list of events in North Tipperary,” he said.

Mayor O’Meara also hopes to catch up with people from around Lorrha while he is in New York.
