New Faces Feature In Nenagh Players Production

Rumors, a farcical play written by the acclaimed American playwright Neil Simon, is this year’s autumn production by the Nenagh Players.

Set in New York the play tells the story of four couples who gather in the posh suburban residence of the city’s Deputy Mayor and his wife to celebrate their hosts’ tenth wedding anniversary.

However the first guests to arrive find their hostess missing and the host has shot himself through the earlobe!

Comic complications arise as successive guests arrive and, given everyone’s upper class status and self-importance, they do everything possible to conceal the evening’s events from the local police and the media with increasingly desperate stories being fabricated.

Born in the Bronx in New York in 1927 the playwright Neil Simon is considered by many as one of the finest writers of comedy in American literary history.

Neil Simon has written over sixty plays and film screenplays and amongst his most successful are The Phil Silvers Show (1950), The Odd Couple (1965), The Goodbye Girl (1977) and Laughter on the 23rd Floor (1993).

In 1991 he won the Pulitzer Prize for his play Lost in Yonkers and has received more Oscar and Tony awards than any other writer.

This year’s play see’s Jenny Bracken take on directorial responsibilities and while Jenny may be new to that role she has long been associated with the Nenagh Players taking many leading roles the most recent of which was in the production earlier this year of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The Neangh Players have a number of new faces joining them on stage this year with Sharon Malone (Ennis) and David Donnelly (Roscrea) making their début.

Making a welcome return to the stage is Seamie McCarthy and Madeline Lovett while amongst the stalwarts are Niamh Hogan, Margaret and Kevin Walsh, Mike McMahon, and Noel Stanley. Donal Bray, who made his début last year, completes a cast that is ably-supported backstage by Michael O’Brien and his crew.

The play runs from Tuesday, November 6th to Saturday, November 10th in the Nenagh Arts Centre. Tickets are priced at E13 (E10 concession) and bookings can be made through DK Travel, Emmet Place on 067 37964.

The opening gala night is in aid of Nenagh Special Summer Camp and tickets for that night only are E22 which includes a pre-show reception in Rocky’s.
