Nenagh Town Council’s Budget Cut By E22,500

NENAGH Town Council’s budget has been reduced by €22,500 following the failure of 34 per cent of households in North Tipperary to pay the household charge.

Town manager Marcus O’Connor told the council’s September meeting that 66 per cent of households in North Tipperary had paid the controversial charge. As a result, North Tipperary County Council’s budget had been reduced by €337,000 with the town council’s budget reduced by a respective €22,500.

He described the reduction as “not a huge amount of money”, but Cllr Tom Mulqueen, Fianna Fail, said that the reduction was “unfair on people who had paid the charge”.

In response Mr O’Connor said: “Two thirds have paid, one third have not paid, and we expect that they will be pursued”.

Sinn Féin’s Cllr Séamus Morris argued that the household charge had been “a mess right from the start”.

He said that there “should have been a proper public debate” about the issue before the tax was introduced.

Cllr Morris also described the introduction of the charge as “bullying. People are taxed to death in this country and they are getting no services out of this.”
