Nenagh Laneway Upgrade Welcomed

A proposal to have no time limit on the loading bay in the enhanced Hanlys Place development was welcomed by Cllr Virginia O’Dowd at Nenagh Town Council. The council is to carry out works that will include a new car park in the laneway as well as build-outs to prevent people parking at the entrance to houses that exit on to the laneway.
“I was shocked at the time limit on the loading bay,” said the Labour councillor. “I don’t think anybody had any intention to put traders out. The intention was to enhance and not to take away from any business.”
In relation to the build-outs, she said: “It is selfishness on the part of some people who will park in front of the entrance to the houses. I know what it is like myself along St Conlon’s Road.”
The revised plan was given to the councillors by town manager Marcus O’Connor, who said work will start within the six-week time frame already set out.
He pointed out that the work would be carried out with the owner in partnership with the council and would be profit-sharing.
He told Cllr Seamus Morris that placing an overhead barrier would add to the cost, and there was no problem there at the moment.
Town engineer Peter Fee told the Sinn Fein councillor there should not be any problem with the proposed two-way system as “we are not talking about a huge volume of traffic”.

Cllr Hughie McGrath, Independent, wanted to know if the town’s bylaws were strong enough to prevent people from moving in, to which Mr O’Connor replied that the illegal parking problem “doesn’t seem to be as bad as in the past”.
In relation to the overhead barrier, Mr O’Connor said: “We’ll suck it and see.”
While the new system will be two-way, there will be no left turn from the new car park to exit the laneway on to Sarsfield Street.
Cllr Jimmy Moran described it as a “great plan” and urged the council to “sort it out”.
“I hate these deliberations. I am sick and tired of seeing the town going backwards and us coming back night after night. Move and start on the construction. You have got to get on with it,” he said.
