Nenagh Council’s Vote Of Sympathy Over Slain Garda

INDEPENDENT Nenagh councillor Hughie McGrath proposed a vote of sympathy and that Nenagh Town Council write to the Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan in response to the killing of Det Garda Adrian Donohoe during a raid on Lordship Credit Union in County Louth.
“I was shocked and horrified that we have reached a point in this society where a serving detective garda can be gunned down like that,” Cllr McGrath said, saying the incident had “rocked them (the Gardaí) to the core”.
Mayor Lalor McGee indicated that members of the public could sign a book of condolences at Nenagh Garda station, while Fine Gael’s Cllr Conor Delaney argued that the incident “was not as far away from us as we would like to think it is”.
Fianna Fáil’s Cllr Tom Mulqueen described the shooting as a “terrible state of affairs”, while Sinn Féin’s Cllr Séamus Morris also encouraged the public to sign the book of condolences.
“Drugs is a major factor and it is time to do something about it,” Fianna Fáil’s Cllr Jimmy Moran said, while his part colleague, Tommy Morgan, said that he could not personally “get over the brutal savagery of what had taken place”.
Labour’s Cllr Virginia O’Dowd described the incident as a “sad day”, while Fine Gael’s Cllr Tom Moylan said the shooting represented a “cowardly and callous act”.
