Nenagh church hears a gathering of voices
A Gathering of Voices was held in St Mary’s of the Rosary of Nenagh this Monday night, the culmination of a two-day visit from the Pomfret School Griff Tones a capella group and choir from the town of Pomfret in Connecticut, USA.
In addition to the Pomfret School group, the Ormond Octaves also sang on the evening, with both groups joining together for the finale, a rendition of An Irish Blessing.
The concert was attended by over 500 people and all proceeds from the event went to North Tipperary Hospice Movement.
The group of 55, including students and their adult chaperones, arrived on Sunday afternoon and that evening were welcomed to Nenagh in a civic reception held at The Abbey Court Hotel hosted by Mayor Lalor McGee. Junior Minister Alan Kelly also attended and welcomed the group to North Tipperary.
The school group was invited to Ireland by Lisa McGee, who lives in Nenagh but graduated from Pomfret School in 1987.
When she and her brother-in-law, Mayor McGee heard about The Gathering 2013 they wanted to do what they could to encourage visitors to Ireland and ultimately to Nenagh.
On Monday morning, the group participated in a “Hurling Experience” organised by Cllr Seamus Morris.
The learned about the game of hurling and took part in a long poc Competition, which was won by Ethan Staten.
Afterwards, they went to the workshop of Philip Bourke, a local hurley maker, to see a hurley being made first hand, after which they had lunch in the Hibernian Inn, did some shopping in the town and toured Nenagh Castle with local historian Kevin Whelan.
Mayor McGee told the Tipperary Star that the group was “astonished” that a representative of the Government, Junior Minister Alan Kelly, would take time out to meet them.
“After the concert on Monday night, they told me that they had never played to as big or as an appreciative audience as they had in St Mary’s of the Rosary, and they would love to come back to Nenagh at some stage,” said the Mayor
