‘Near Misses’ On New N7 Cycleway
THERE have been a few “near misses” between cyclists and drivers on the N7 cycleway, Cllr Mattie Ryan “Coole” told the October meeting of Newport electoral area. “Are you happy with the signage?” he asked council officials.
Cllr Jonathan Meaney stated that there was no signage on the R494 to remind people that there might be cyclists on the road, and said he had “noticed there was a lot of cyclists” on the roads.
Cllr Meaney praised the announcement by Junior Minister Alan Kelly that €275,000 was being made available for Ballina and Killaloe as part of the Active Towns programme that includes cycleways. The money is to be divided, with Ballina receiving €135,000 and Killaloe getting the remainder.
Senior engineer Michael F Hayes said that €70,000 still had to be drawn down for the N52 cycleway and that North Tipperary County Council was looking at an Active Towns strategy for Thurles.
In relation to any near miss, he said: “We have official cycle tracks and cyclists have a right to be on the road.”
He is to check to see what warning signs can be erected and told councillors that the council had funds for such work.
Cllr Mattie Ryan “Coole” said it can be “frustrating” for motorists when two cyclists were travelling “very near the white line”.
