Minister To Recognise Students Efforts

This is always an exciting time for secondary school students throughout North Tipperary who are taking part in the Student Enterprise Awards. There is even further excitement and incentive to the competition this year, as Mr. Alan Kelly, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport has kindly agreed to present the prizes.

The final will take place in the Abbey Court Hotel, Nenagh on Thursday, 7th March.

The competition is open to all secondary school students but it is generally groups from 1st, 2nd, 4th & 5th year that participate. The quality of entries from students is amazing with innovative ideas and projects being presented each year.

Parents, family and friends are more than welcome to come along to view stands and exhibits from 11.30am.

The Student Enterprise Awards is a nationwide County & City Enterprise Boards initiative designed to encourage students to take a business idea from market research and follow through to production, selling, record keeping, management and finally write a comprehensive Business Plan detailing their activities. At a local level, the competition is organised by the Tipperary North County Enterprise Board.

Last year Ursuline Secondary School, Thurles scooped the top prize in both Intermediate and Senior Categories competing against 7 other schools and 135 students. This year those same seven schools will be competing against each other across three categories - Junior, Intermediate and Senior (Colaiste Mhuire - Thurles, Nenagh Vocational School, Ursuline Convent - Thurles, Our Lady’s Secondary School - Templemore, Presentation Secondary School - Thurles, St. Mary’s Secondary School - Nenagh, VEC - Newport). The first prize winners in each category will walk away with a prize and the opportunity to represent North Tipperary at the National Final in Croke Park on 17th April.

Specially commissioned trophies and cash prizes worth up to €3,000 are at stake in this year’s competition!

The independent adjudicators for the County Final this year are Ms. Alice Varley, Vice-Chairperson of the Tipperary North County Enterprise Board, Ms. Anna Kinnerk, CEB Coordination Unit, Enterprise Ireland and Mr. Brian Keating, Shannon Development.
