Marlfield Golf club takes shape
The final shape of the greens is evident to all who travel the road from Knocklofty through Marlfield village to town. The massive earthmoving machines have re-shaped the landscape and with the seeding of the newly-laid areas in progress, nature will soften the raw appearance.
The new underpass is almost completed and further traffic problems are unlikely as the road surface is laid and marked. The new roundabout at the end of the Marlfield Hurling Club field is having an effect on vehicle speeds and locals are hoping that South Tipperary County Council might examine the feasibility of a roundabout in the middle of the village to manage the speeding traffic coming down the hill from town.
Sympathy: Marlfield Village extends its sympathy to the Byrne family of Mountain View on the recent death of Frank Byrne’s brother Charlie in Thurles.
Burial grounds: The Marlfield Village Committee will be getting the grass cut in the old burial grounds to the rear of St Patrick’s Chapel twice this year.
The first cut is scheduled for early May and we are asking all who have family buried in this lovely old cemetery to attend to their graves as they are somewhat in need of a little attention.
There are headstones in these burial grounds that pre-date the foundation of the United States of America and it is reputed that there is one stone that marks the burial site of a crusader who was buried there almost 1,000 years ago.
The Church stands on part of the site of the Abbey of Inislounaght, which was one of the great Cistercian Abbeys of Ireland with lands attached of over 20,000 acres at one time. These abbeys were the multinational giants of their era and when you visit these old burial grounds you can feel the pull of time.
