Italian Film At Arts Centre
THE acclaimed Italian film, I’m Not Scared, which features on the school second level English course, screens at Nenagh Arts Centre on Thursday, January 24. Based on the novel by Niccolò Ammaniti, the film is directed by Gabriele Salvatores. The story is set during Italy’s “Anni di Piombo” (Years of Lead), a time riddled with terrorism that ran from the 1960s to the 1980s. The book and film cleverly places the story around two young boys who are forced to deal with a grown-up situation not of their making.
Set in Italy’s southernmost interior regions of Basilicata and Puglia in the 1970s, I’m Not Scared starts below ground, along the walls of the hole in which kidnapped Filippo, a delicate, blonde northerner from a wealthy family, has been hidden. Above ground, a group of children bicycle through a sea of corn, a landscape, though gorgeous, is plagued with unremitting heat, nefarious locals, and dismal prospects for their future.
Later, while playing with his friends, Michele stumbles on the covered pit in which Filippo is hidden. Terrified and repelled by what he takes initially for a corpse, he befriends the spooky creature. Making no mention of his discovery to his family - for Michele, Filippo represents a kind of fantasy brother - the boys are then set on a course that will have devastating consequences.
