High Winds Challenge Galtee Hillwalkers

Happy New Year to all our members and welcome back to last Sunday’s first footers on the mountains.

All three groups were out in full fitness, starting at 10am with Owen Ryan and 11 walkers from the A group. Setting out from Clydagh Bridge, in exceptionally mild and calm conditions, their plan was to do the Glencush Horseshoe. But proceeding upwards, they were taken by surprise by sudden gale force winds which stopped them in their tracks at the Grassy Knoll. Anticipating worse to come, they decided to modify their plans and to stick to the lower ground. Their alternate route took them on a shorter 4hr meander of the foothills, along by the river and through forest paths to make their way safely back to Clydagh. With thanks to Owen for his expert navigation and wise judgment.
