Getting Stitched Up for Hot Mikado

If you've passed Monadreen direction over the last number of weeks you could be forgiven a raised eyebrow or two.

Teenagers in brightly coloured oriental kimonos, the sound of sewing machines and clashing Samurai swords have all become common place over the last while, leading to speculation as to what exactly is going on.

The truth is, however, that Phoenix Productions have been busy putting the final hems and stitches on their costumes for their upcoming production of The Hot Mikado, which takes place at The Premier Hall from the 5th to the 8th of August.

The Hot Mikado is a jazzy and swinging take on the original Gilbert and Sullivan show, The Mikado, which sees it given a jumped up 1940's style make over. Like the musical itself, the costumes are a lively and colorful affair and so members of the company have been hard at work making sure that the three little maids, the gentlemen of Japan and each and every character on stage is kitted out for the occasion in fabulous fashion. In order to cut costs but maintain the high production values that the community has come to expect from Phoenix shows over the last number of years, the cast themselves have taken to the sewing machines in a bid to costume the show!

The show's producer, Aisling Doyle, who is this year working with the company for the eleventh year, was quick to praise the enthusiasm and talent the group have brought to the whole project. "We have always had great support when it comes to costume design and manufacture but this is the first year that the entire cast has had a hand in the overall design, literally!

This year we noticed that an awful lot less of the kids were in part time jobs for the summer, as they are so hard to come by right now, and so with time on their hands and bundles of fervor they were all given sewing lessons and have taken over my house as their own workshop. There's a couple of sewing rooms, a cutting room, a storage room, I'm lucky to have a room to myself! It's been fantastic to have them working together though as this is a monster show to costume. As well as that, it offers them exposure to other sides of the production process, which is what Phoenix is all about really." With effort like this going into the visual elements of the show, it is sure to be another memorable performance from the young troupe. The group are also hugely thankful to all the parents and friends who have helped with this, and every other aspect of the show to date.

They would also like to remind patrons that the fundraiser night at the dogs takes place this Friday night, the 24th of July at Thurles Dog Track. Tickets on the door are priced at 10 euro. There will also be a prize draw on the night with prizes including a mystery trip for two, Sunday Lunch kindly sponsored by Mitchell House, and a jersey autographed by reigning Munster champions, the Tipperary hurling team, to name but a few. The company would love to see as many friends and supporters from the community as possible on the night, for what is sure to be an enjoyable evening for all of the family. Bookings for The Hot Mikado itself are available from any members of the cast, by calling the Box Office on 0504-90204 or by emailing boxoffice@sourcearts.ie
