Gardai To Look At Nenagh Junctions

NENAGH gardai are to monitor traffic management at two Nenagh junctions, the town’s Joint Policing Committee heard. Sgt Pat Curran revealed that the Gardai had monitored the junctions at Summerhill / MacDonagh Street and Clare Street / William Street over the past few months and that during that time there had been two accidents at the Clare Street junction. However, only one of them may have been caused by the junction’s lay-out.
Cllr Conor Delaney said he had observed people making an illegal right turn on to William Street from Clare Street and said: “People are openly abusing the rules of the road. If the message goes out these junctions are being monitored they may be a little more conscious.”
He appealed to people to pass on the registration number of cars breaking the law, warning that “a lot of complacency is starting to creep in. The no right turn is for everyone’s safety.”
Martin Langton, community representative, said that motorists were speeding down from Summerhill on to the Dublin Road junction and said there would be “no harm keeping an eye on it. We blame the children for speeding, but adults, too, have a lot to learn.”
Cllr Hughie McGrath maitained there was “confusion” at that junction with drivers believing there were two lanes coming into the turn.
He was supported by Cllr Tommy Morgan, who claimed cars were coming up on the inside while trucks were trying to take the bend.
Town Manager Marcus O’Connor said the town council would look at road markings, but that in relation to drivers using that junction it was “obvious people don’t know the rules and there is often a stand-off there”.
In relation to Clare Street, he said: “From my observation, it is local people who are breaking the law. We didn’t put the signs up for the fun of it, but to stop people from cutting across traffic.”
Meanwhile, the JPC heard that people are drinking along different parts of the Nenagh River walk that stretches from the Borrisokane Road to the Dublin Road. Cllr Hughie McGrath revealed that groups of people were “hanging about” on the amenity. He also stated out that local anglers had erected a seat near John’s Well on the walk, but that it had been uplifted and thrown in the ditch. “It was set in concrete,” he said, pointing out that elderly people liked to use it.“We are encouraging people to go out and walk and it will be a pity if people begin to be wary about using the walk,” he said.
Supt Bob Noonan said the walk was “very precious to people and you don’t want a situation where people are frightened to use it.” He said the Gardai would look into the issue.
