Galtee Walking Club

After a frosty start, Sunday turned out to be the perfect day for walking with blue skies and sunshine most of the time.

Even the wind gave us all a break! Over on Slievenamon, Liam and Shane Doheny led the perfect climb of this much loved mountain for the 14 (B) walkers who turned up in Kilcash village at 10am. Having summited via the usual path, Liam and Shane took a novel route and bearing in a northerly direction, they went on to the cairn on Sheegouna where they enjoyed exceptionally stunning views all round. Then proceeding onwards, they took the forest tracks, past the mass rock to the barrier where, earlier on, Liam had organized some cars to take them back to Kilcash. It was a new experience for the group and for Marion, her very first climb of Slievenamon! All thanks to the Dohenys for their splendid organization and for a great day out.

Rody Tierney was out navigating the western section of the Marathon route with the A walkers. 20 walkers took the challenge from Rock on Thorabh Car Park, across the Slievenamuk Ridge via the Shrough monument and down into Moore Abbey in Galbally. Lunch was had in warm sunshine before tracing their path back along the river and through the fields and forests. Early signs of Spring were evident all around from the lambs tails on the hazel bushes to the nascent yellows of the gorse. Good to see. Rody bids a new walker, Helen, welcome and hopes she enjoyed her first day out with the group.

Next Weeks Walks; Sunday March 3rd. Rody Tierney will be doing the prep for the Eastern section of the Marathon, starting with the A walkers at 10am at Bansha Woods car park. Rita Mooney will meet the B walkers at 10am Ballydavid Hostel (off the Rossadrehid Road) for a four hour loop walk. The C group meet at Christ the King at 11am for a forest loop with George Keogh. Note that the fixtures meeting will be on Thursday 7th at the Excel 8pm.
