Galtee Walking Club
The snow-capped Galtees provided the location for two of our walks last Sunday as well as a dramatic backdrop for the third.
The 10km, 4 hour B walk, lead by Brendan Sheils, was in preparation for the upcoming Winter Festival. Starting from Clydagh Bridge the group of 12 took the tracks to the Galtee Stile and the open mountain. Keeping close to the stream they climbed to reach the crest of the coum overlooking Lake Diheen, a height of 600 metres. They took shelter for a break before returning back to Clydagh on the same route. Thanks Brendan and thanks also to Roger Lonergan for helping out.
The first outing as leader can be an anxious time for anyone but it becomes even more challenging when 39 people turn up at the start. This was the case for Mary O’Riordan and Sadie Ryan in Lisvernane on Sunday last. However, undaunted by the numbers, Mary and Sadie lead the group around the 10km Dolmen Loop in a calm, relaxed and professional manner as if they had been leading for years. Thanks and well done on a great start.
The Glen of Aherlow Winter Walking Festival takes place in early February and all three walks on Sunday next are in preparation for that event. Tom Lyons leads the A walk to Cush Mountain and Lake Borheen and Catherine Russell leads the B group to Lake Curra, both starting from Clydagh Bridge at 10am. The C walkers meet at Aherlow House Hotel at 11am with David Stapleton for the Rock an Thorabh loop.
The club extends its deepest sympathy to Mary Murphy and her family on the passing of Mary’s husband, Seamus.
