Galtee Walking Club
As the 1st of November approaches it’s the time of year when membership fees become due and all members are encouraged to renew as soon as possible. It’s also a good time for anyone thinking of joining the club to sign up and the form to join or renew is available on our website.
There were two walks on Sunday last in dry but occasionally foggy conditions. The A walk was a strenuous 7 hour trek taking in all the Galtee lakes as well as a large section of the summit ridge. Starting at Clydagh Bridge, Owen Ryan led the group of 4 in to the Galtee Stile and on to Lake Diheen. The weather was clear with fog overhead as they crossed to Lake Borheen via the Geisha Steps.
Taking the valley floor they made their way to a track over Lake Muskry and then up a gully at the back to O’Loughlin’s Castle on the ridge overhead. From there it was fog all the way back across the top taking in Galtybeg and Galtymore before descending via Slievecushnabinnia over the last lake of the day, Lake Curra. Thanks and well done Owen.
The B walk was in the Knockmealdowns where Alice Nongonierma led her first club walk that brought a group of 20 to the starting point at Bay Lough car park. From there they walked along the road in the direction of the Glenandaree River where they began to ascend. Following the river half way up they continued to climb to Kockmealdown at 794m. Due to fog and a cold wind on the high ground they did not delay but followed the wall down to enjoy a lunch break in the sun. The Sugarloaf at 663m was the final peak of the day before descending to the cars at Bay Lough with 12 km covered in 4 hours. Congratulations on a great start, Alice and thanks also to John.
