FG Councillor Wants Carer Cuts Reversed

THE Government has been urged to reverse the cut in the Carers’ Allowance that was included in last week’s Budget by Nenagh town councillor Conor Delaney.

“I have written to all three North Tipperary TDs and asked them to make representations on my behalf to have this decision reversed and I await their responses,” he said.

Cllr. Delaney confirmed that at the November meeting of Nenagh Town Council he supported a motion not to reduce home help services in North Tipperary and to support a provision in the Budget that does exactly that would be wrong and not true to his convictions.

“It would be extremely hypocritical of me on the one part to oppose cuts to home help services in North Tipperary and then on the other part to support a Budget that cuts Carers’ Allowance. I simply won’t do that,” he said.

Cllr Delaney stated that his stance was “not a populist decision but a common sense decision and that is why I have written to my local TDs looking for their support”.

Like so many people in this country, he accepted we were in dire financial straits and the Government has an inenviable task of trying to balance the books and make tough decisions that no-one wants.

”Carers provide an excellent service to their loved ones and to this country and I firmly believe that if anything they are saving the country money by not putting them into public care and already burdening an overstretched service.

“We can all have our political spats any day of the week, but the time has come to pull together, to have the courage of our convictions and to admit that we got this one wrong.

“A reverse in the cut to the Carers’ Allowance is not a show of weakness but a show of bravery and strength and I urge the Government to reverse this decision,” he said.
