Doran Tackles ‘Chain Gang’ In Rebuke of Cllr. Nevin

Thurles Town Cllr. David Doran (Sinn Fein) strongly rebuked Cllr. Evelyn Nevin’s remarks in last week’s Tipperary Star:

“I have never called into question Evelyn’s reasons for putting herself forward as a councilor and I acknowledge that she tries her best to represent the interests of Thurles. However, Evelyn has reacted to an earlier statement I made regarding conference expenses in a manner that makes one think ‘the lady doth protest too much’.

“My statement of two weeks ago was never a personal attack on Evelyn or, indeed, any of my fellow councilors. However, Cllr. Nevin has chosen to make her rebuttal personal. My point is and always has been, that conferences are a waste of taxpayers’ monies. For example, we have had councilors going to Sherkin Island for conferences. Although beautiful and a lovely holiday spot, what has Sherkin in common with Thurles? Evelyn says that she has only attended one conference with no Merlot or Chardonnay. I’m sorry she was disappointed and perhaps they will let her bring her own vintage next time, but seriously, whether it’s one conference or ten attended, it’s still too many. By choosing to support the earmarking of E 10,000 to fund these conferences, she was giving her tacit approval to the ‘pigs in the trough’ mentality that feeds on these perks.
