Christmas Decorations Competition For Schools

NORTH Tipperary County Council has announced that its popular Christmas Decorations Competition is taking place again this year. The challenge is for children to make Christmas tree decorations out of recycled materials such as eggshells, cardboard, newspapers, plastic and glass bottles, tin cans, milk and juice cartons.

All of the decorations need to be made from recycled materials and the competition aims to get children and their parents thinking about how to reuse and recycle materials that might otherwise be thrown away. The competition is run annually by North Tipperary County Council to encourage the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle of materials in schools and homes.

“Over the year’s entries have included decorations made from light bulbs, egg shells, plastic bottles, yoghurt cartons, cardboard and more unusual materials such as CD’s and cotton wool,” said Deirdre Cox, environmental awareness officer, North Tipperary County Council. “This year we hope to get children using their imaginations to make decorations from items found in their household or school that would normally be placed in the recycling bin. All of the entries will be put on display beside the Council’s giant Christmas tree in the Civic Offices and the winning entries will be placed on the tree.”

Closing date for entries is Friday, December 7, and the winners will be invited into the Civic Offices in Nenagh to be presented with their prizes by the Mayor of the county, Cllr Michael O’Meara.
