Cashel Man Wins Round-The-World Trip

(Pictured) Darren Gayson (21) from Cashel beat over 100 other entrants to win an all expenses paid, round-the-world trip last week. Convenience store chain Spar ran the “See the World with Spar” competition to find a charismatic, media-savvy individual to travel around the world and document their progress.

To win, Darren got nearly twice as many views on his entry video as his nearest competitor, a to-date total of 878, 447.

The trip, beginning on July 30th, will take Darren to the UK, South Africa, Zambia, Australia, Indonesia, China, Russia, Norway, Denmark, Hungary, Slovenia and Italy. He will be fully equipped by Spar with travelling equipment including “various digital goodies”. Darren is one of the many “World Travel Reporters” Spar have chosen from around the world to undertake such a trip. The public will be able to keep up with Darren’s progress via Facebook, Twitter, and his own blog.

Darren was originally in a carpentry apprenticeship, but three years ago qualified as an exercise and fitness instructor. He competes professionally in Muai Thai; a combat sport that originated in Thailand, and is a strong advocate of chocolate spread.
When asked in an interview by Spar representatives if he was nervous about the trip, he responded:

“To be honest, you could say I am petrified of the whole lot of it, but that is what makes it so exciting for me. I love not knowing what to expect!”

He is most looking forward to seeing “the northern lights in Norway, the beaches in Australia and the ”Vodka Express” train for 14 days from Moscow to Beijing”. He also can’t wait to sit on the Devil’s Armchair; a ridge perched at the very edge of Zambia’s Victoria Falls.

The determination that helped him come out on top in this competition extends to all aspects of his life philosophy.

“My life is always on the go, I never want to stop doing anything and I hate sitting down when I could be on the move. I believe you should always try your hardest for everything you want. When you want something bad enough in life nothing can get in your way and if something does, have a spoon of chocolate spread and try again”.

It is unknown if “all expenses paid” extends to Darren’s supply of chocolate spread.
